More famous than Beethoven's Ninth? Yes, in the 19th century, the choral entry in Mendelssohn's "Lobgesang" was more popular than the "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's last symphony. To this day, "The night has passed, but the day has drawn near" is considered one of the most beautiful romantic choral pieces ever. However, comparisons are often misleading, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy did not need to surpass Beethoven. His work, which he created in 1840 for the anniversary "400 years of the invention of printing" for the book city of Leipzig, has its own musical qualities and uniquely combines tradition and innovation. The other two works that the Dresden Kreuzchor and Dresden Philharmonic will perform together that evening also give the choir, soloists, and orchestra their own specific roles. This provides an opportunity for both to showcase their special qualities.
